The former capital of the state of Gujarat – Ahmedabad is one of the largest and fastest growing cities in the country. Situated on the banks of the Sabarmati River, this place is known for its textile industry and is that, sometimes called Manchester of the East. In the last decade or so, the city has emerged as a hub for industrial and economic activities as a result entrepreneurs to small-time businessmen come to this city on a frequent basis. Some of the leading business houses of the nation have their headquarters over here, with the Information Technology (IT) industry finding its wings in this region. Reaching this state capital is quite easy with National Highway 8 passing through it that links Mumbai and Delhi; Kalupur Railway Station (the main terminus of the city) serving important trains from other parts of the country and availability of flights to Ahmedabad Airport from metro and non-metro cities.
About the Airport
Considered to be one of the busiest in the country, it is also called Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The total area on which it has been built is 1,124 acres, with it having four terminals; the latest one designed on the model of Singapore Changi Airport.
Terminal 1 and 2
The first terminal serves domestic carriers and is able to accommodate 1400 passengers at any given point in time. It has two floors, featuring all modern amenities, including eateries and Wi-Fi access. There is parking space for about 250 cars over here. The second terminal caters international airlines and has 32 check-in counters and 4 aerobridges. This terminal became operational in September 2010 after it was inaugurated in July 2010.
Terminal 3 and 4
The third one is mostly used during the season of Hajj. Mainly used to cater secondary traffic, it can accommodate about 500 passengers during peak hours and has a parking space for 200 cars. The fourth one is used for cargo activities and as per records, about 56 per cent of international cargo, is handled over here.
It takes about 20 to 25 minutes to reach here from the main railway station, which is around 8 km away. Even the inter-state bus stand is located at the similar distance. To reach here, travelers can hire private taxis or opt for bus rides, which ply quite frequently. In case, the need is to reach the city center from here, then travelers can hire cars from prepaid booth located outside the terminals.
Facilities on Offer
People can enjoy duty-free shopping at Terminal 2, where shops are lined offering various items at reasonable prices. Finding eateries inside the terminals is not difficult as there are many over here, such as tea / coffee shops, snack bars and juice counters. There are book stalls too inside the awards, where people can purchase books of their choice, either to read it while waiting for their cheap domestic flights or international ones, or in-flight. Apart from these, there is provision like wheelchairs available for disabled passengers at the airport.
